Introduction
In our latest video, “Misadventures in the Bacana,” we invite you to a unique visual and auditory experience where a watercolor painting comes to life. This video combines art, music, and animation to transport you to the streets of an affluent neighborhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the early 20th century.
This is the first video in the history of Argentine tango animated with artificial intelligence. The music, however, was 100% interpreted and composed by me, Roberto Pugliese.
Main Plot
The video begins with a watercolor painting displayed in a gallery. The painting shows a couple dancing tango on the streets of a Bacán neighborhood, accompanied by a guitarist and several tables with people drinking coffee. The scene captures the essence of tango and life in an elegant neighborhood.
Highlights
-
Exhibition of the Painting: The camera tours the gallery, showcasing the painting on the wall while visitors observe it.
-
Live Music: A group at the exhibition begins to play an electronic chill out tango titled “Misadventures in the Bacana,” which complements the video’s atmosphere.
-
Animated Painting: The AI-animated painting comes to life, going through various states that capture the essence of tango and life in the neighborhood.
-
Criollo Duel: The animation culminates in a knife duel, typical of the era, where one man kills another, recreating a scene from the 1900s in Buenos Aires.
Criollo Duel in Buenos Aires of the 1900s
The criollo duel, also known as a “knife duel,” was a way to resolve honor disputes among men in Buenos Aires in the early 20th century. These confrontations often took place in secluded areas and usually had witnesses who acted as seconds to ensure that the rules of the duel were followed.
The causes of criollo duels varied but were generally related to matters of honor, insults, personal conflicts, or romantic disputes. In popular culture and Argentine tango, criollo duels became an emblematic image of bravery and passion.
Argentine tango, as an art form, often reflected and narrated neighborhood stories and everyday life, including the presence of criollo duels. Tango lyrics and melodies evoked the intensity and drama of these confrontations, making the criollo duel a recurring element in tango culture.

Mizapie Studio Art
The original painting that inspired this video is currently on the wall of my studio, “Mizapie Studio Art”. Located in Belmont Bay in Woodbridge, Virginia, USA, this is where I create all my artistic works. I invite you to visit and discover the art that is born in this very special space for me.

About the Artist
I am Roberto Pugliese, and I have over 200 videos on YouTube with nearly a million views, performing Argentine tangos on classical guitar. Occasionally, I also compose electronic tangos, a genre in which I was a pioneer as I was one of the first to compose in this style back in 1992. Additionally, I have over 100 original tango scores for guitar, all accompanied by reference videos for better understanding.
