What inspired this piece

Every time I come back from a trip, there is a moment that tells me I’m home. As I drive along Route 1, I cross the Occoquan River.
The highway runs parallel to the railroad bridge, and Woodbridge Station appears right after it.

Then, Grace and I look through the structure toward Belmont Bay. That view matters to us. Mizapie Studio Art is right there,
and you can see it clearly from the road.

I’ve always loved bridges, train stations, ports, and airports. They feel like gateways. However, this iron bridge is different.
It fills my heart because it marks the return. Because of that, it feels like the sign that we made it back.

Our home is in the same area, and Woodbridge feels like a small paradise to us. That is why I wrote
The Iron Bridge Song—a tribute to a beautiful, historic bridge that welcomes us home.

The real “Iron Bridge” in Woodbridge

The bridge that sparked this piece is officially documented as the Woodbridge Railroad Bridge,
carrying rail traffic over the Occoquan River. For example, it features two main
Parker through truss spans with classic riveted steel details.

Bridge records date it to 1915. It was built by the Phoenix Bridge Company
(Phoenixville, Pennsylvania), with engineering and design credited to Gustav Lindenthal.

Today, the rail line is still active. As a result, this structure is living rail history, not a museum artifact.

Woodbridge Station and the line it belongs to

The modern Woodbridge Station opened in 1992 as part of Virginia Railway Express commuter service.
It also serves Amtrak passenger routes.

The station sits near the site of an older Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad stop.
Historically, it was called Occoquan until 1951.

Meanwhile, the tracks here are part of what is now the RF&P Subdivision in the CSX system.
This corridor has linked Northern and Southern rail routes for generations.

A short rail-history backdrop

Railroads reshaped the United States in the 1800s. They connected cities, moved mail and industry,
and turned distance into something manageable.

In Virginia, one of the most important names is the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad (RF&P).
It was chartered in 1834 and began service in 1836.

During the American Civil War, this line became important because it connected the region around Washington, D.C.,
and the Confederate capital of Richmond.
